Cleaning the gym is more than just vacuuming or wiping down the floor. All gym equipment will be included in a thorough clean, both large and small. After using your dumbbells or treadmill, you should wipe down all equipment. It is important to keep your equipment clean and hygienic. For proper maintenance, you should deep-clean your equipment at least every two to four weeks.

Why you should clean your home gym

Cleaning your home regularly will reduce your chances of becoming sick and prevent bacteria from spreading.

It is also important to clean your gym to avoid dust-related diseases. Dust in your gym can cause serious respiratory problems, such as asthma if you are working out and sweating.

How to clean home gym equipment

You must wipe down your gym equipment with a microfibre towel before deep cleaning it. It will remove dust and prevent you from spreading bacteria and dirt around.

Cleaning vertical and horizontal surfaces should be done from top to bottom. To properly sanitize your gym equipment, the disinfectant needs to be left on for a long time to remove bacteria. We recommend that you wipe surfaces down slowly rather than using a quick swipe.

When doing a deep cleaning, you should consider the following: cardio machines (treadmills, bikes, etc. ), resistance bands, yoga mats, and gym rubber flooring. Free weights (dumbbells or barbells, for example), resistance bands, yoga and rubber gym flooring, and free weights are all important to consider when doing a deep clean.

1. How to Clean Your Cardo Machine

The smooth surfaces and screens of cardio machines like treadmills and exercise bicycles make them easy to clean.

To remove dust, wipe down the treadmill using a microfibre dry cloth. Do not forget to clean the corners as well as the main areas, such as the handles and buttons. To remove all the dried mud, use a soft bristle brush on the belt. It will also make cleaning the belt easier in the future. Please wait until the first half of the belt is completely dry before wiping it down with a wet cloth. Use a damp cloth on the handles and buttons of your treadmill. When wiping electronic surfaces, such as the screen, avoid using a soaking towel.

Resistance bands can get dirty and unsanitary when they are used on the skin. It is because our skin naturally carries a lot of dirt and oil. It is better to use a bucket of warm water with a few drops of dish soap and dip the resistance bands into it. They should be moved vigorously around for 15-20 seconds. Scrub them to remove any stubborn dirt. To remove all soap, rinse the bands under running water and let them dry. Avoid drying out the bands in the sun, as this can damage the material.


Yoga mats, like resistance bands, can hold onto body oils and bacteria over a long time. This is why it’s important to clean them regularly.

Not all yoga mats are washable in the machine. Check the tag before putting it in the washing machine.

If your mat cannot be machine washed, use a damp cloth to wipe both sides and then let it air dry. Use a spray bottle to mix warm water with dish soap, and then use the solution for a more thorough cleaning. The solution can be scrubbing the mat using a microfibre towel. Rinse it with running water. The mat should be laid out and allowed to completely dry (both sides) before it is rolled up for storage.

You can reduce the risk of skin irritations and illness by cleaning your mat.


Rubber flooring in gyms should be cleaned regularly as it can also hold dirt and bacteria. Rubber, carpet, and hardwood are all common materials for gym mats. To clean any of these surfaces, you should first vacuum the floor. After the majority of dirt has been removed, you can use sprays or wipes.

Rubber gym mats can be cleaned with a solution of water, a cup dish soap, and lemon juice (optional). Allow the mats to air dry rather than wipe them down to achieve a streak-free finish and avoid an odor.

6. How to clean rust off gym equipment

Rust can accumulate on metal equipment over time, affecting its use. Untreated rust can lead to users having to purchase new equipment.

Use a 50:50 mixture of water and vinegar on your equipment to remove small amounts of corrosion. Use a wire scrubber to remove as much rust as you can after the equipment has been soaked.

Spray WD-40 liberally on the rust and allow it to sit for 15 minutes. This will ensure that the bond between metal and rust is fully broken. Before using your equipment, wipe it down to remove any residual WD-40.
