‘One Chip Challenge’ pulled from shelves after mother says spicy tortilla chip contributed to her son’s death

Paqui, a manufacturer of very spicy tortilla chips, which are marketed as”One Chip Challenge “One Chip Challenge,” has decided to remove the chips from shelves after an individual reported that her son, a teenager, died from complications after consuming just one fragment.

They were offered in small portions, and the seasoning contained two of the most potent peppers on the planet, including the Carolina Reaper and the Naga Viper.

Each chip was placed inside a coffin-shaped container with an image of a skull in the center.

Lois Wolobah told NBC Boston that her son, 14 Harris Wolobah, ate the chip on Friday and then visited the hospital nurse complaining of stomach cramps. Wolobah stated that Harris- a Doherty Memorial High School junior in Worcester, Massachusetts- went to bed the following afternoon. He died in the hospital later that same day, she added.

A postmortem examination has not yet determined the cause of death.

Florida students are taken to a nurse following Paqui’s “One Chip Challenge.’

A spokesperson stated in a statement released on Thursday that Paqui had been “deeply saddened by the death of Harris Wolobah and express our condolences to the family.”

“While it is true that the Paqui One Chip Challenge is designed for adults only, we have noticed an increase in teens using the product. We are concerned about the entire population of our customers and have decided to pull the product off the shelves,” the spokesperson said. “We are actively working with our retailers and are offering refunds for any purchases of our single-serve one chip challenge product.”

In the meantime, until sales were stopped, Paqui’s advertising encouraged people to take part in the contest by eating a chip and posting photos of their teeth on social networks after the chip went blue and taking as long as they could to cool the burn using water or some other food.

The issue has been present in various forms since.

“Only the bravest will be able to prove they faced the Reaper when they show off their blue tongue after completing the challenge,” Paqui’s former brand director, Brandon Kieffer, said in an announcement earlier this year.

The label on the product warned pregnant women, infants and those who have health problems, those who are allergic to spicy food as well as those allergic to nightshades, peppers or capsaicin (the ingredient in chili peppers that gives them their spicy) should steer clear of the chip. It is recommended that people seek medical help in the event of difficulty breathing and fainting, or experience nausea for a long time after eating the chip, according to the warning.

The label also advised those who touch the chip clean their hands with soap and stay away from contact with their eyes, or any other areas that are sensitive to touch.

The heat in chilies can be measured by the Scoville scale, which determines the heat units contained in any given pepper. Carolina Reapers have approximately 1.7 millions Scoville heat units, and Naga Viper peppers around 1.4 million. Jalapeno peppers, by contrast, can score as high as 8.500 Scoville heat units.

The most significant health risks associated with eating the Carolina Reaper involve vomiting or burning or numbness sensations in the mouth, as per the findings of a research study from 2020. There have been studies that have documented serious headaches after eating extremely hot peppers. There was also one instance in which one man vomited so much due to eating ghost peppers that it cut a hole in his stomach.

Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said Wednesday in a blog post via the website X that hospitalizations related to incidents related to the One Chip Challenge have been reported all over the nation as well as among teenagers. In the fall of 2011 Dublin Unified School District in Northern California Dublin Unified School District in Northern California told NBC Bay Area that a number students were sent home as a result of reactions that were adverse to the drug.

“While the investigation into the cause of the teenager’s death in Worcester continues, the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office would like to remind parents to research and discuss with your children about the one-chip challenge,” Early wrote.

Parents, he said they should tell their children “not to partake in this activity.”
